Paithani sari has its origins in antiquity, hailing from the royal dynasties of the medieval town of Paithan near Aurangabad. The history of Paithani sarees can be traced back to 1712, when the Nizam of Hyderabad, Asaf Jah II, tried to introduce the Paithani sarees to the royal court. Since the early 17th century, Paithani sarees were woven at a village called Paithan near Aurangabad in Maharashtra. Paithani evolved from a cotton base to a silk base. Silk was used in weft designs and in the borders, whereas cotton was used in the body of the fabric. The Paithani saree body is weaved using the hand in looms and the weaving process of the border and the palla is very similar to the tapestry weaving technique. Thus, resulting in soft and delicate Paithani pure silk sarees. Even the motifs and the designs of the Paithani pure silk are unusual. Having said that, the motifs of the sarees are created by interlocking and tying the coloured threads to the warp of the loom. In fact, even if you look at the reverse side of the saree, it will look as gorgeous as the front side. On a Paithani, designs like square border, dotted designs as well as plain designs are available. Lotus, Hans, Ashrafi, Tota-Maina, Peacock, etc. are some of the commonly seen designs on a Paithani. During the Peshwai period, Asawari design Paithani became popular. In a Paithani saree, usually traditional colours like, Lavender, Brinjal(purple), Peacock (Blue/Green), Kusumbi (Violet Red), Red, Pophali (Yellow) are seen. Among other varieties, single coloured and kaleidoscope-coloured designs are also popular. The kaleidoscopic effect is achieved by using one colour for weaving lengthwise and another for weaving width wise. An epitome of elegance, this beautiful Paithani saree is laced with traditional charm which is accentuated with intricate gold zari small motifs woven across it. The border is embraced with gold zari artistry of Paithani design and Meenakari peacocks on either side. The contrast gold zari palla of saree is a perfect embodiment of beautiful workmanship, bedazzled with intricate Meenakari-gold Jamdani weaving and adorned with peacock, lotus paisley-floral series. One can style this saree with full/half-sleaved blouse and traditional jewellery. One can also style the saree with a belt or traditional potli (purse) to get the grand appeal.
